Meghalaya is an exquisite hilly region located in the eastern sub – Himalayas. For me, Meghalaya feels like a place straight out of fantasy. From its sheer natural beauty in the form of countless waterfalls, crystal clear rivers and ridiculously friendly people, Meghalaya draws you into a different world altogether.
During this solo visit to Meghalaya, I could only visit a few places. However, it was one of the most memorable journeys of my life.
Places I visited in Meghalaya
My first place of visit was Shillong, the capital state of Meghalaya. It’s also a beautiful city that acts as the gateway to Meghalaya. With the beautiful hills around and the number of lakes, Shillong is referred to as the “Scotland of East”. During my stay here, I really enjoyed the weather, food and the hospitality of the people.
My second place of visit was Dawki. It is also the last town on the Indian side before the Bangladesh border. This town is famous for its magnificently clean river with emerald green color. I am not talking about the usual clean green water, this really is the crystal clear water and one can see the bottom of the river bed with the naked eye!
My third and final destination was Cherrapunji otherwise known as Sohra. Claimed to be one of the wettest places in India, the ride through the roads in Cherrapunji is just as breathtaking as the destinations here. From my experience, I would say Sohra is one of the marvelous gems of nature which must be on everyone’s bucket list who likes to travel around India.
Well, that’s the background of my first Meghalaya journey, there are many more places I would like to visit in Meghalaya and I can’t wait to visit those places and strike them off my list.
